Example of otoplasty to help create a more normal helical contour in this patient with a lop ear deformity. This young male patient was unhappy with how his ears developed (or were under-developed) with an excessive helical rim thickness. An ear with this type of cosmetic deformity is often times referred to as a constricted ear or a lop ear. It is also called a cup ear deformity by some. This deformity is best appreciated on the profile views where you can see how the helix was quite wide. This is a somewhat unusual cosmetic ear deformity that is sometimes referred to as a constricted ear. Others refer to this as a lop ear or cup ear. I performed cosmetic ear surgery to resect some of the extra skin and cartilage – creating a much more normal looking ear on both sides.
