I receive frequent questions from patients about whether nose surgery can be covered by insurance. In most cases, procedures performed strictly to change the cosmetic appearance of the nose are not eligible for coverage. However, surgery performed to improve nasal breathing — such as functional septorhinoplasty — may be approached differently depending on a patient’s individual insurance plan.
Functional septorhinoplasty is designed to correct structural problems within the nose, including a deviated septum, internal nasal valve collapse, or other anatomical issues that restrict airflow. While the primary objective is to restore proper nasal function, improvements in nasal shape can sometimes occur as a natural result of correcting these underlying structural concerns.
Patients with PPO insurance plans may choose to contact their carrier directly to determine whether the functional component of septorhinoplasty meets their criteria for reimbursement. Our office does not submit insurance claims for nasal surgery. That said, we can provide supporting documentation for patients who wish to file independently with their insurance provider. Because policies and medical necessity requirements vary, it is important to confirm your specific benefits with your carrier prior to proceeding.
If you would like to learn more about functional septorhinoplasty and whether it may be appropriate for your concerns, please contact our San Diego office to schedule a consultation.
