San Diego Plastic Surgeon Demystifies the Rhinoplasty Decision And Recovery Process

Dr. John Hilinski ensures his rhinoplasty patients have clear expectations of their results and the recovery process by offering comprehensive preoperative consultations.

San Diego, CA – Dr. John M. Hilinski, a San Diego plastic surgeon, can use rhinoplasty to create a more harmonious look among facial features. By reshaping the nose to be more symmetrical, or resizing the nose to achieve a more proportionate look with the other features of the face, Dr. Hilinski says he can bring balance to his patients’ appearance.

Rhinoplasty is not a procedure that Dr. Hilinski takes lightly, and he spends a great deal of time during the consultation process preparing his patients for the surgery. In a recent blog post titled “San Diego Plastic Surgeon Answers Your Questions About Rhinoplasty Consultations,” Dr. Hilinski provides a detailed overview of his comprehensive consultation process. He says, during these consultations, he prioritizes the patient’s perspective. “I always like to hear the patient’s concerns framed in his or her own words.” By listening to patients state what they would like to change about their nose and the results they are seeking, Dr. Hilinski says he can begin to determine if rhinoplasty is the best way to reach their goals. As an additional aid, Dr. Hilinski’s San Diego plastic surgery practice makes use of computer morphing technology that allows patients to see a visual projection of what their nose might look like after surgery.

Dr. Hilinski says he also encourages patients to spend some time after the consultation process contemplating their decision. Though he notes that input from friends or family members may be helpful, he stresses the importance of his patients coming to a conclusion on their own. “After all,” says Dr. Hilinski, “rhinoplasty is a very intimate decision that should be largely influenced by personal motivation.”

In a follow-up blog post titled “How Can You Best Prepare For Rhinoplasty?”, Dr. Hilinski spends time answering questions about the recovery process. He reports that seven to ten days after the procedure, most of his patients are what he calls “supermarket presentable,” going on to explain that “standing in line at the local supermarket, it will not be apparent that they have just had surgery.” Within three months, Dr. Hilinski says his patients typically experience a 70% reduction in swelling, though he makes sure they realize that the final results may not be completely apparent for 10-12 months or more.

Dr. Hilinski views rhinoplasty recovery as a collaborative process, as patients are responsible for certain elements of their postoperative care, such as avoiding trauma to the nose or being diligent about the nasal exercises patients are instructed to complete. “These are very important aspects of the rhinoplasty recovery process that cannot be done by the rhinoplasty surgeon,” says Dr. Hilinski. “I make sure that all of my rhinoplasty patients feel comfortable with this type of collaborative process well before we begin surgery.”
