What is Upneeq?

Upneeq (oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop for acquired ptosis that helps lift the upper eyelid by virtue of how it temporarily affects the tiny eyelid muscles inside of the upper eyelid region. Acquired ptosis, also referred to as low-lying lids, is a medical condition that often develops later in life but affects adults of all ages. Acquired ptosis typically occurs when eyelid muscles stretch or weaken, which causes the upper eyelid to have a droopy appearance.

Another medical term for droopy eyelids is blepharoptosis, and similar to acquire ptosis is a condition where the upper eyelid begins to droop down and starts to cover up the colored portion of the eye (called the iris). When this occurs, it can result in someone looking excessively fatigued or older than they actually are because the eyes look more closed all the time.
When Upneeq is applied to the eye as with any other eye drop, the active ingredient causes the  Müller’s muscle to begin to lift within minutes, elevating the upper eyelid. In most cases, patients will see a 1-3 millimeter improvement in their upper eyelid position. The full effect of Upneeq is seen in 2-3 hours, and the effects can last upwards of 8+ hours.

Upneeq Eyelid Lift

Take a look at these results from patients treated with Upneeq eye drops in clinical studies.

If you look at the upper eyelid position prior to the use of Upneeq eye drops, the margin or edge of the eyelid covers a slight amount of the iris.

The bottom photo shows her just hours later after the application of just one drop in each eye. As you can readily see, her upper eyelid has now been lifted and raised by at least a few millimeters. No anesthesia. No cutting. No scars. Just more open eyes!

Here is another example of how much more open the eyes can look after Upneeq treatment in someone with fuller eyelashes. This is the result just hours after one drop of Upneeq in each eye. If you simply look at the before and after photos, you will readily see that her eyes are more open. As part of this more open, less droopy upper eyelid appearance is the fact that the whites of her eyes look even brighter! Many patients who use Upneeq note the same thing.

FAQs About Upneeq

Am I a candidate for Upneeq?

Good candidates for Upneeq are men and women with concerns about droopy upper eyelids due to acquired ptosis. Upneeq is not indicated for individuals with congenital ptosis. Because Upneeq is an alpha-adrenergic agonist, it may affect blood pressure and can interfere with some prescription medications such as beta-blockers. Upneeq may also have increased risks for those with glaucoma. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for Upneeq is to schedule an appointment and discuss your medical history with Dr. Hilinski.

How long does Upneeq last?

Upneeq last approximately 8 hours and should be applied once a day. Patients should wait at least 15 minutes before inserting contact lenses or using other eye drops after using Upneeq.

Does Upneeq have any side effects?

The most common side effects associated with Upneeq are eye irritation, dry eye, eye inflammation, blurred vision, eye redness, and headache.
