Biocorneum Topical Silicone

BioCorneum® is the #1 selling physician-dispensed topical silicone scar gel treatment. Dr. Hilinski has been using and recommending BioCorneum® to his patients for several years now.

What Is BioCorneum®?

BioCorneum® is a technologically advanced version of silicone gel that has a reputation as being one of the best methods for treating scars. This includes scarring as a result of cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. BioCorneum® helps to improve the appearance of scars beyond what the body can do naturally during the healing process. In the process, BioCorneum® aids in enhancing the natural physiological process of healing a wound.

Uniqueness of BioCorneum®

What makes BioCorneum® so unique in the world of plastic surgery is the fact it is the only FDA-cleared treatment of its kind. Unlike so many of its competitor products, BioCorneum® contains a sunscreen – SPF 30 – that allows the skin to have an added measure of safety from the sunlight’s ultraviolet rays. This is key when it comes to reducing chances of dyspigmentation (unwanted color changes) during formation of a scar. In addition, BioCorneum® is flexible, breathable and waterproof, which makes it perfect for active patients.

Benefits of BioCorneum®

Potential benefits of using BioCorneum® for surgical and traumatic scars include:

  • Smooths scars
  • Flattens scars
  • Reduces discoloration
  • Reduces redness

How Do You Use BioCorneum®?

BioCorneum® is applied topically to the skin – directly over the scar. See the adjacent photo diagram. After it is applied, the silicone gel will typically dry within 5-10 minutes. This will result in a barely visible silicone coating on the skin surface. This thin coating of BioCorneum® will allow for the outer layer of skin to bind with the protective silicone barrier – providing you with an added measure of protection against physical disruption of the healing scar, chemical irritation and potential infection.

It is recommended that patients start using BioCorneum® once the sutures (stitches) are removed. Apply the silicone gel twice (2x) per day for upwards of 3-4 months in order to achieve the most optimal result in terms of favorable scarring. If your body is inclined to form raised, reddish, thicker scars, you may benefit from using the topical gel for upwards of 9-12 months.

Where You Can Use BioCorneum®

BioCorneum® can be used in a variety of scars for patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive surgery. The following is just a partial list of procedures:

  • Upper eyelid lift
  • Facelift and necklift
  • Chin implant
  • Breast augmentation/breast implant
  • Breast lift
